Description:
The Physics Department at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has a requirement for support services to deliver one section of PH1121 (Mechanics) and one section of PH1322 (Electromagnetism) as resident courses in the Academic Year 2025, Quarter 2, from (06 January – 22 March 2025).
These two courses will be offered back-to-back in an accelerated mode with PH1121 taught during the first half of the quarter and PH1322 during the second half of the quarter, each for roughly 5 weeks. To accommodate the accelerated delivery, the classes will meet for 2 hours per day, 5 days a week. In addition to class meetings, we require 2 hours of office hours daily to answer students’ questions. The total number of labor hours estimated by Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) for the contract teaching for combined PH1121/PH1322 course in winter quarter 2025 is 460 Labor Hours.
- This course covers the fundamentals of calculus-based mechanics: Kinematics and dynamics of particles, statics of rigid bodies, work, energy, systems of particles, collisions, rotations of rigid bodies, angular momentum and torque, mechanical properties of solids, elasticity, harmonic motion, fluids. Prerequisite: A course in calculus or concurrent registration in a calculus course and approval of the instructor.
- Basic electromagnetism: electric charge, electric and magnetic fields, forces on charges in fields, electric potential, Gauss’s law, Ampere’s law, Faraday’s law, resistance, capacitance, inductance, DC and AC circuits, magnetic properties of matter, transient currents in circuits, Maxwell’s equations, electromagnetic waves.
Requirements:
- Minimum of five years of experience teaching physics courses in an undergraduate or graduate, resident environment.
- Doctorate Degree in Physics, or a closely related academic field.
- Must have conducted research in physics or a closely related academic field. This may be demonstrated by having publications in referred journals related to physics.
