The national spotlight is shining on MKS2 LLC and other Austin businesses in the annual Inc. 5000 list of the country’s fastest-growing privately held companies.
MKS2, an advisory and consulting firm for government agencies like the U.S. Army and Department of Veteran Affairs as well as some corporate clients such as Accenture and Zynga, was the top-ranked local business on the 2017 edition of the list, which was published Wednesday. It came in at No. 92 with 2016 revenue of $4.7 million — up more than 4,000 percent from 2013.
MKS2 also grew its headcount during that time from two employees to 58.
It was the only Austin-area company in the top 100. The seven local businesses in the top 500 represent an eclectic mix of sectors: Double A Events (No. 123, revenue up 3,270.4 percent), Facility Innovations Group (No. 236, revenue up 1,809 percent), Local Web Leads (No. 335, revenue up 1,325.2 percent), Becker Wright Consultants (No. 360, revenue up 1,222.8 percent), Texan Allergy and Sinus Center (No. 406, revenue up 1,076.4 percent), The Ask Method Company (No. 462, revenue up 951.3 percent) and CCR Roofing LLC (No. 490, revenue up 912 percent).
A total of 91 Austin metro companies made the list, putting Austin as No. 16 among U.S. metros with the highest number of businesses in the ranking, according to Austin Inno, which published the full list. That was down from 96 in 2016.
The Inc. list offers an intriguing peek into the top-line business operations of companies in Austin and across the U.S. For comparison, No. 1 on the Inc. 5000 this year was California software developer Skillz, which has created a mobile gaming streaming and competition platform and grew revenue more than 50,000 percent in three years to $54.2 million. It was founded in 2012.
To qualify for the Inc. 5000, companies must have revenue of at least $100,000 in the first year and $2 million in the third year.
